Recess is essential for students, offering them a much-needed brain break. While I love taking my students outside, sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate. On rainy or windy days, we have to bring recess indoors. To keep things fun and organized, I set up activity stations around the classroom. This way, students can play in groups of two or three, making indoor recess less chaotic and more enjoyable.
Students quickly develop their favorite activities and actually look forward to indoor recess. If you notice that a particular station is always crowded, consider using a sign-up sheet to ensure everyone gets a turn. Before purchasing supplies on your own, check with your bookkeeper or administration to see if district or school funds can cover the costs. Alternatively, you can create an online fundraiser or an Amazon wish list. Collaborating with other teachers can also be a great way to share resources and rotate activities.

Here are 10 indoor recess ideas that have been a hit in my classroom:
- Straw Construction: My students love getting creative with interlocking straws. This activity is so popular that a sign-up sheet was needed to ensure everyone had a turn.
- Snap Circuits: A favorite among my STEM enthusiasts, this activity keeps them engaged for hours.
- Origami: Students enjoy working at their own pace to create beautiful designs they can take home and share with their families.
- LEGO: A classic must-have! I started with a small container, but my son’s outgrown LEGO collection provided more than enough pieces for my students to build and explore.
- Bracelet Making: My students love making bracelets for themselves or family members. I started with a basic set from Amazon and frequently replenish it with supplies from thrift stores or donations.
- Coloring, Drawing & Tracing: Some students prefer drawing even during outdoor recess, so we always bring our coloring basket outside. At the beginning of the school year, I survey their interests and stock up on coloring books that spark their creativity.
- Jenga: This classic game is a staple for indoor recess.
- Connect 4: Another classic, Connect 4 is always a hit with my students.
- Play-Doh: Watching students’ imaginations come to life with Play-Doh is delightful. I keep a variety of sets and restock as needed.
- Domino Creations: This activity combines following directions, critical thinking, and creativity, making it a fun and educational choice.
